What Causes Fungal Skin Infections?

Having a fungal skin infection can be bothersome, itchy, and embarrassing. It can certainly take a hit on your self-esteem! The first step to avoiding a fungal skin infection is to actually understand the cause of it. This week, let’s take a closer look at what may be causing your fungal infection and how you can best prevent another one in the future.

First and foremost, a fungal skin infection (also known as mycoses) can present itself anyone on the body. This includes the scalp, feet, nails, groin, arms, back, and chest. Symptoms will depend on the type of fungal infection you may have, but often are along the lines of itchiness, inflammation, discoloration, scaling, etc.

The cause of a skin infection is simple. Fungal infections will occur when there is an overgrowth of yeast fungus or dermaphytes on the skin. Once this fungi grows out of control, the symptoms set in and remain persistent unless treated.

It is important to note that fungal infections are contagious. This is one of the main reasons why they are all so common in us individuals! Since fungus thrives in hot, humid climates, it is important to stay clear of the following:

  • Public locker rooms
  • Public swimming pools and hot tubs

You may also want to refrain from sharing any types of clothing, personal items, or gym equipment with others. You never know what there is to catch!

To do your best to avoid a fungal skin infection, follow the tips listed above. You should also practice good hygiene, making sure to keep skin clean and dry – especially areas that hold moisture (skin folds, feet, between toes, etc.)

By taking the proper precautions, you can minimize your exposure to a fungal infection.
